Killip School Regional Detention Basins

 Purpose

The Killip School Regional Detention Basins were designed and constructed to detain and then drain floodwater during a flooding event. The City and its partners identified two large open field areas that were included within the plans for the new Killip Elementary School as ideal locations for on-site detention basins and underground stormwater infrastructure. This project includes the connecting of the basins to the existing stormwater system. The detention basins will eventually double as play fields at the new Killip Elementary School.

The detention basins are designed to store approximately 11 acre-feet of stormwater during large floods. Much of the stormwater that isn't conveyed through the pipe at Arroyo Seco will overflow into Ponderosa Park to these new basins. A pipe has been installed at the outlet of these basins and connects to the existing stormwater pipe in 3rd Street. This will allow the basins to drain so they don’t retain water and thus provide capacity for future storm events.

Timeline

The basins have been completed and are in place. Construction on the outlet pipe is currently under way.

Anticipated Construction Impacts

The creation of the outlet structure may temporarily divert traffic on 6th Street during construction.
